What moves gold
The real drivers of XAU/USD — the US dollar, real interest rates, inflation, central-bank buying and safe-haven demand — and how they interact.
The live XAU/USD price
The live gold price shown on this page is the spot XAU/USD quote, expressed in US dollars per troy ounce and converted to rand for South African traders, with a reference level around 4275.0. It is the same underlying price that FxPro uses for its gold CFD, so the number you see here should be close to the bid and ask on MT4, MT5, cTrader or the FxPro app, minus any spread the broker adds.
Because gold is priced globally in dollars, the rand value of XAU/USD moves with both the metal and the USD/ZAR exchange rate. A trader in South Africa should watch the rand price when funding with EFT, but always place orders on the dollar-denominated CFD; the calculators on this site handle the conversion automatically when you enter your account currency.
When gold is most liquid
Gold trades almost around the clock, but liquidity is not even: the deepest market and tightest spreads occur during the London session, especially in the first hours, and again when New York opens and overlaps with London. For a South African trader, that overlap falls in the late afternoon and early evening local time, which is the best window to enter or exit a XAU/USD position on FxPro.
Outside those hours, particularly during the Asian midday and the daily rollover, the spread on gold can widen and stops may be more vulnerable to short-term spikes. The calculators on this site default to the London/New York overlap for pivot calculations, but you should always check the live spread on your platform before trading, as the tightest conditions only last a few hours.
What really moves the price
Gold is driven first by real interest rates and the US dollar: when real yields fall or the dollar weakens, gold tends to rise, and vice versa. Economic data out of the US, such as inflation prints and Federal Reserve decisions, therefore moves XAU/USD more than any single South African event, even though the rand conversion can amplify or dampen the local result.
Beyond rates, gold reacts to geopolitical stress, central bank buying, and shifts in ETF holdings, but these are slower forces that set the trend rather than the intraday range. A trader in South Africa should watch the US economic calendar and the USD/ZAR pair alongside the gold chart, because a sharp rand move can change the local value of an open position even if XAU/USD is flat.
