What the spot gold price is

The live gold price shown here is the spot XAU/USD price — the current price in US dollars for one troy ounce of gold delivered immediately. Spot gold is set by over-the-counter trading between banks, refiners and large institutions, and it is the benchmark that all gold products, from futures to CFDs, ultimately reference. The price updates continuously during market hours, moving tick by tick as buyers and sellers match orders.

A spot price of 4275.0 means one ounce of gold costs $4,275. Because one standard lot of XAU/USD is 100 ounces, a trader buying one lot at that price controls $427,500 worth of gold. The price is quoted to two decimal places, and the smallest movement — one pip — is 0.01, which equals $1 per lot. That is the foundation for every calculation on this site.

Why your broker’s price differs: the spread

The price you see on your broker’s platform is never exactly the spot price, because brokers add a spread — the difference between the bid (sell) and ask (buy) price. The spread is the broker’s fee for providing liquidity and taking the other side of your trade. For gold, spreads are typically competitive at a broker like FxPro, but they widen during news events or thin liquidity.

The spread matters because it is a direct cost: if you buy gold at the ask price and immediately sell at the bid, you lose the spread. For example, if the spread is $0.30 and you trade one lot, that is a $30 cost in and out. That is why the profit and loss calculator on this site includes a cost field, so you see your true net result.

How to read the price change and refresh

The live price display shows the current price, the change from the previous close, and the percentage change. A positive change means gold is more expensive in US dollars than it was at the last daily close, which often reflects a weaker dollar or rising safe-haven demand. The price refreshes every second during active market hours, but it may pause during the daily rollover when liquidity is thin.

Do not trade every tick — gold is volatile, and a single news headline can move the price several dollars in seconds. Instead, use the change to gauge the session’s tone: if gold is up strongly while the dollar is down, that is a macro signal, not a random wiggle. Combine the live price with the pivot points tool to see whether the current price is near a key support or resistance level.

How this price feeds the calculators

All the calculators on this site use the live gold price to give you real-time numbers. The pip value tool uses the current price to convert a 0.01 move into rands, and the margin tool uses the price to calculate the notional value of your position. The profit and loss tool takes your entry and exit prices and applies the live price to show the result in pips and money.

Because the price changes constantly, the numbers you get are accurate only at the moment you calculate them. If the price moves $10 while you are planning, your margin and pip value change too. Always refresh the price before you commit to a trade, and treat the calculator results as a planning aid, not a guarantee.
